Toyota smashed Crispa’s defense with its searing fasrtbreak plays last night to score a 119-108 victory and grab the solo lead in the PBA Invitational Championship before some 20,000 fans at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Tams, who set the all-time record of 102 points scored on fastbreaks last Thursday, were again unstoppable as they tallied 62 points on fastbreaks alone and were seriously threatened after taking the first quarter by 11 points, 38-27.
“If we keep on playing like this, I think we have a good chance of winning the championship,” said Toyota coach Dante Silverio whose boys had failed to make it to the finals twice this season.
Silverio added that the key to their victory was their running game and the exceptional showing of imports John Irving and Bruce “Sky” King and locals Francis Arnaiz and Robert Jaworski.
The four combined for 105 points.
The victory was the third straight for Toyota while Crispa suffered its first defeat in three games.
In the first game, Emtex Sacronel Brazil leaned on a 15-2 finishing kick to repulse Ramrod Blocks Australia, 111-100, for its second straight victory.
Veteran Ubiratam Maciel ignited that fiery finish with a three-point play off George Wilson as the South American champions pulled away from a 96-98 deficit going into the last four minutes.
That the Redmanizers were outcassed were visible from the start as the Tams, with Arnaiz at the firing end of their fastbreaks, cruised to a 38-27 lead in the first quarter.
Crispa threatened only once at 41-42 early in the second quarter but after Toyota broke away, 53-43, on hits by Irving, King and Ramon Fernandez, the Tams were well on their way to victory.
The Tams went on to put an 18-point lead, 110-92, midway in the final quarter as Baby Dalupan’s boys totally abandoned their defense and concentrated on narrowing Toyota’s lead.
“We really got beat this time,” Dalupan said, adding that he conceded the game as early as the first half when the Tams routed the Redmanizers on fastbreaks alone, 39-12.
Irving led eight Tamarsws sent in by Silverio with an evening-high 42 points, aside from pulling down 18 rebounds, 17 assists and four blocked shots a he outclassed Crispa ace import Cyrus Mann.
Irving converted 21 of 29 attempts from the field for an exceptionally high 72.42 percentage.
Arnaiz had 26 points while Bruce King added 19 points and had five rebounds, 19 assists and two blocked shots.
Mann led the Redmanizers with 30 points. He had 22 rebounds, 10 assists and three blocked shots while new recruit Chris McMurray had 22 points, 17 assists and one blocked shot.
