GUAM, March 6 (via Philcom) — Toyota’s bid for a glorious exit turned into a nightmare Monday night as Crispa, playing like it was the one saying goodbye, came through with a devastating fourth quarter to pull off a 108-92 victory over the Corollas here.

The Redmanizers, stung by the humiliating loss in the first game Sunday, spewed fire throughout this time and buried the fast-tiring Corollas with relentless fastbreaks before another sell-out crowd at the University of Guam gym.

GUAM, March 5 (via Philcom) — Toyota, trying to leave behind the legacy of a true champion, played with its old fire Sunday to humble Crispa, 109-101 in a game filled with the color of their past encounters before a highly-enthusiastic crowd here.

It was close all the way and the match was decided in the last four minutes — as in most of their past encounters — with the Corollas finishing strong and the Redmanizers turning ice-cold.

Abe King, sizzling from afar, fired a game-high 32 points. Arnulfo Tuadles had 23 and nine rebounds, six of them offensive, but it was Robert Jaworski, playing with a sense of mission, who personally assured the victory.

GUAM, March 4 (via Philcom) — Crispa showed too much class in routing the Varsity selection, 134-109, Saturday night in a warm-up for its duel with arch-rival Toyota here.

It was a real treat for the thousands of Filipino fans who jammed the University of Guam gym as the multi-titled Redmanizers virtually toyed with the Americans.

GUAM, March 3 (via Philcom) — The series they have been calling here as a dream-come-true but actually is the curtain call of the storied Crispa-Toyota rivalry gets going tomorrow at the 4,000-seat University of Guam gym.

Crispa takes on the varsity selection, the stronger of two local sides the pros will be playing against, at 8 p.m. while Toyota meets the Guam All-Stars, a team powered by players from the University of Guam at 6:15 p.m.

Once just might be enough, but twice?

“Well it could be something,” said Ed Ocampo as he mulled the impact of one win and a possible two over the Crispa Redmanizers in the light chill of a nearing dawn at the Verandah coffee shop of the Hotel Magellan in Cebu City.

It was just 12 hours before the Toyota Tamaraws, with Ocampo as their new coach, were to take on the Redmanizers at the Cebu Coliseum in the first of a two winningest ballclubs aimed at enabling Cebu and Davao to raise funds for the coming Papal visit to these two Southern Cities.

Probably more than Coach Baby Dalupan who only came to Cebu on the day of the game, Ocampo, who arrive with his boys ahead of Dalupan, had a lot riding on the outcome of the Tamaraws’ first meeting with their arch rivals for PBA supremacy. Even assuming that the games were exhibition, nothing-at-stake stints.

One year and five months after he found himself in Dante Silverio’s cooler and eventually on his way out of the Toyota line-up, Danny Florencio finally made it back Friday night last week to the Araneta Coliseum, the scene of his greatest triumphs and biggest disappointments in pro basketball.

Danny’s comeback game was Toyota’s pre-season exhibition match with no less than the Tams’ arch rivals for league supremacy, the Crispa Redmanizers, now known as the Walk Tall Jeansmakers. The game was the nightcap of a benefit twinheader staged as part of of an ongoing campaign to raise funds for the forthcoming visit to the Philippines of Pope John Paul II.

As no doubt Danny had wished it, his “homecoming” to his old ballclub bore with it touches of those days when he was the bleacher crowd’s “nino bonito” and his being placed under preventive suspension by the then Coach Silverio had not placed yet his playing career under a cloud.

Danilo Florencio missed a jumpshot from the right wing with two seconds left last night and Toyota and Crispa fought to a 110-all stand-off in a surprisingly fierce exhibition game at the Araneta Coliseum.

Florencio, set up for what was intended to be the winning play following a Toyota timeout after Fortunato Co, Jr. had tied the score, took a hurried shot and the crowd of some 18,000 reacted with contrasting cheers and jeers.

That miss denied Florencio a touch of drama to his comeback, although he appeared as dependable as ever despite the obvious weight he has put on as a result of his long lay-off.
