It’s definite Crispa and Toyota, the country’s winningest professional ballclubs, will play a two-game exhibition series starting Feb. 29 in Guam.

Touyota team manager Jack Rodriguez made the confirmation yesterday as he looked forward to the first meeting of the two teams outside the country.

“I think we are ready,” Rodriguez said. “These boys are professionals. Even during off season, they still keep their body in shape.”

Rodriguez said the team which played in the 1983 season will go to Guam, including Abe King, who has been traded to San Miguel Beer this year.

“Mon (Fernandez), Sonny (Jaworski) and Abe (King) will go there,” said Rodriguez, who became Toyota’s manager last year.

The Crispa-Toyota matches in Guam are being sponsored by the Filipino groups there. One of thre leaders behind the project is Filipino TV host Popoy Zamora who is based in Agana, Guam.

Rodriguez said he is not aware if there are games pitting Toyota with another team. Aside from Toyota, Crispa will meet Guam’s strongest quintet before proceeding to Hawaii where it will resume its goodwill series.

While in Honolulu, the Redmanizers will clash with the University of Chaminade varsity team, Hawaii’s top basketball squad. The Chaminade, it will be recalled, beat the highly-rated University of Kentucky which then had 7-4 Ralph Sampson, who now plays in the NBA.

Chaminade’s victory over the Sampson-led Kentucky was considered the biggest basketball upset in amateur caging in the United States.

Note: The story erroneously mentioned University of Chaminade beating Kentucky. Chaminade beat Virginia which was led by Ralph Sampson.
