Guam: Crispa, Toyota play local teams (March 3, 1984)

Crispa and Toyota arrived in Guam for a two-game exhibition series to cap off their storied rivalry. The series came almost a month after the stunning sale of the Toyota franchise to Beer Hausen.

GUAM, March 3 (via Philcom) — The series they have been calling here as a dream-come-true but actually is the curtain call of the storied Crispa-Toyota rivalry gets going tomorrow at the 4,000-seat University of Guam gym.

Crispa takes on the varsity selection, the stronger of two local sides the pros will be playing against, at 8 p.m. while Toyota meets the Guam All-Stars, a team powered by players from the University of Guam at 6:15 p.m.

It will be the start of the three-day nostalgia filled series that has expectedly generated excitement among the 30,000 strong Filipino community here and serves likes a homecoming for some Toyota players.

Toyota stars Robert Jaworski and Danilo Florencio, both college players then, played here in the late 60s in a riotous match that continue to be the talk of Filipino basketball fans up to this day.

Crispa and Toyota will play the first of two scheduled matches tomorrow and all indications point that the players are taking the series seriously as if the games will finally resolve the issue of which of the two is the better team.

Although both coaches called for an optional practice Saturday, most of the players turned up in what could be a fair gauge of their taking the games to heart.

Coach Tommy Manotoc, who is expected to arrive here Sunday together with team owner Danny Floro, will call the shots for the Redmanizers while assistant coach Quirino Salazar will pilot the Corollas.

Actually, only one game was scheduled for Crispa and Toyota against each other, but it was changed Saturday to accommodate the request of their fans.


The second game will be played Monday.
