At least five PBA All-Filipino Conference season records were set last night as Crispa tore an undermanned Toyota team to shreds, 172-142, in a tame, free-wheeling contest at the Araneta Coliseum to clinch the second finals berth.
With the victory, the Redmanizers arranged a best-of-five Crispa-Toyota title showdown, marking the seventh time that both teams will be tangling for the championship.
In a game that one would rather forget, both teams cast aside whatever semblance of defense and piled up point after point in a boring, irritating contest that had many in the crowd of 10,000 cursing the two teams for not playing seriously.
It was the dullest Crispa-Toyota game ever as both teams, particularly the Tams, simply went on with the formalities of the game. Toyota had clinched a finals slot last Tuesday when it beat Filmanbank, 131-114, for its fourth straight victory.
Crispa’s victory, which enabled the Redmanizers to tie the defending champions for the lead with identical 4-1 slates, slammed the door shut on Tanduay’s bid to gain a playoff for the second finals berth.
The Esquires had beaten Filmanbank in the first game, 106-99, to temporarily stay alive in the race.
True enough, most of the records set for the evening were in scoring.
Tamaraw Abe King set a new individual season record with his 60-point output to eclipse the previous high of 51 established by Antonio Torrente of Royal Tru-Orange. Atoy Co of Crispa unloaded 50 points to miss tying the old mark by one point.
The combined score of 314 points was also a new season high, beating the 300 points set when Toyota beat Honda in the first round, 159-141.
The 172 points of Crispa also erased the team high of 159 by Toyota while Crispa’s 45 assists during the game surpassed the 37 set by the Redmanizers against Gilbey’s Gin in the first round.
In the private duel between the two teams, the 30-point winning margin of Crispa was by far the biggest.
The previous high was 24 when Crispa defeated Toyota, 123-97, in the second conference of 1976.
As early as the first game there was no doubting that Crispa would win the game. Toyota reported without Ramon Fernandez, Francis Arnaiz and Jesus Sta. Maria.
The scores:
