Crispa gave Toyota one of its most rough beatings in their fabled rivalry last night, 118-109, as the Jeanmakers moved significantly to a share of the lead at the halfway mark of the PBA Invitational at the Araneta Coliseum.
Moving about with the smoothness of a finely tuned orchestra, the Jeansmakers exploded with unbelievable accuracy in the third quarter where they anchored their victory as the Tamaraws never regained their bearings after falling behind, 75-89, going into the last quarter.
Silvester Cuyler gave some 15,000 spectators an inkling of his potential when he led his team to the heights of near excellence, going six for six in the field and two tor two at the charity lane in the third quarter. He went on to finish with a game-high 24 points.
“It’s his night,” said Crispa coach baby Dalupan of Cuyler who has not gone beyond mediocrity in his earlier outings with the Jeansmakers.
The finality of Crispa’s victory was not reflected in the final score but with still four minutes to go, the Jeansmakers were enjoying a 25-point advantage, 114-89, then made only four more points as they took it easy in the dying minutes.
“We played well. Everyone was up to the game. It was a good team effort,” said Cuyler afterwards as Crispa posted its third win in four games to tie idle Adidas for the lead.
Toyota dropped to a tie for third place with Nicholas Stoodley which handed first conference champion U-Tex its fourth straight setback, 130-117, in the other game.
Cuyler’s streak seemed to have a contagious effort on his teammates as Byron “Snake” Jones repeatedly outfoxed his man to finish with 26 points while Fortunato Co, Jr. shot 17, nine of them on three-point baskets in the third quarter.
Arnulfo Tuadles sparked what looked like a Toyota rally early in the fourth period when he helped narrow the gap to nine, 82-91. But that only signalled another furious Crispa offensive as Alfredo Hubalde, Bernard Fabiosa and Alberto Guidaben combined with their imports to give Crispa that 114-99 lead.
So desperate were the Tamaraws in trying to catch up that they made several attempts from three-point line in the fourth period but only one of 14 found its mark.
Toyota coach Fort Acuna charged his team’s defeat to Crispa’s terrific shooting percentage which was 53.33, making good 48 of their 90 field goal attempts. Toyota made only 40 of 92 tries for a 43.48 clip.
