Toyota exploited Crispa’s breakdown in team discipline in the second half last night and walked off with a 114-106 victory to grab the lead in the PBA Reinforced All-Filipino Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
With some 20,000 fans watching, the Redmanizers lost their appetite to play after an altercation between coach Virgilio “Baby” Dalupan and Alberto Guidaben late in the third quarter and they fell easy preys to the fired-up Super Diesels.
The misunderstanding turned into a shouting match later in the dugout as Guidaben charged that Dalupan does not use the same yardstick imposing discipline to the players of the team.
“Parang hindi pantay ang pagtingin ni coach sa mga players ng team,” said the 6’5’’ center, referring to Dalupan.
Although Guidaben would not say what triggered the fracas, it was apparent that he took the cudgels for Alfredo Hubalde, his compadre, who was benched by Dalupan throughout the match.
An altercation with import Al Green after a misplay late in the third quarter set off Guidaben’s tantrums.
Hubalde said after the game that he was not sent in apparently because he had failed to attend practice last Sunday although he charged that other players did the same but Dalupan allowed them to play anyway.
Another veteran player, Gregorio Dionisio, sat out the entire match and late said that it would be better for him to leave the team than get what he called cold treatment from Dalupan as he expressed sympathy to both Guidaben and Hubalde.
While other members of the team just watched, team skipper Fortunato Co, Jr. tried to explain the reasons behind Dalupan’s action.
Dalupan, obviously bothered by Guidaben’s action was unavailable for comment. He left immediately after the game, accompanied by team manager Danny Floro.
The incident spoiled what would have been a memorable encounter between the two dominating ballclubs who played with their sharp forms for three quarters.
Although the Redmanizers were behind by only one point, 79-80, at the end of the third quarter, it was apparently that they had lost their hearts and the Super Diesels stormed ahead by 11 points, 98-87, behind a flurry of baskets with Danilo Florencio at the firing end.
