Arturo Cristobal missed a side jumpshot with two seconds left last night and Toyota came through with its second straight victory over arch-rival Crispa this season, 129-128, in the PBA Reinforced All-Filipino Conference thriller at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Super Corollas found the breather through a pair of charities by Ramon Fernandez off Glenn Hagan’s sixth foul in the last 49 seconds, 129-125, only to find themselves almost in the losing end as Crispa battled back.

Fortunato Co, Jr. sank his second three-point basket for the night with 36 seconds to go, 129-128, and Fernandez himself almost blew it off when he missed a layup with seven ticks remaining that sent Bernard Fabiosa dashing home.

Fabiosa elected to pass it to Cristobal, who attempted from the side and missed, enabling the Super Corollas to preserve the victory.

The win, repeat of Toyota’s 111-110 squeaker over Crispa in the openers last March 7, boosted the Super Corollas record to 7-4 while the loss lowered the Redmanizers’ mark to 6-4 although they kept the Division A lead.

Almost lost in the shadow of the Toyota-Crispa thriller was Yco-Tanduay’s convincing 113-102 win over league-leading San Miguel Beer which snapped the Brewers’ six-game winning streak.

It was only the second loss for Tommy Manotoc’s boys while the Esquires raised their record in Division B to 6-5.

“It was pure luck that carried us through,” said Toyota coach Ed Ocampo.

“Crispa was not so solid in the first half and we took advantage of their fouls,” Ocampo added.

“Malas lang talaga,” said Crispa mentor Virgilio “Baby” Dalupan. “We had a last chance to win but we missed.”

Cristobal, hurt during a layup attempt late in the first half, had come in for the fouled out Hagan.

After trailing most of the first half, the Redmanizers rallied to level the count at 49-all and went on to post a four-point lead, 61-57, at the half.

Seconds before the end of the first half, Cristobal caught Ramon Fernandez’s blocking hand on his forehead. The former Apcor star, with his left eye reddened, was carried out of the court on a stretcher.

But before he could be taken out, Dalupan was slapped a technical foul by referee Alberto de la Cruz by saying unprintable on the officiating.

Dalupan loudly protested why the three officials did not call a foul on Fernandez, saying that the incident was too clear.

In the end, however, it was two Crispa errors one by Hagan and another by Alberto Guidaben — that spelled the doom for the Redmanizers.

Fernandez, following a 41-point performance against the U-Tex Wranglers last April 24, led all scorers with 32 points while five other Super Corollas hit in double figures.

Six Redmanizers also scored in double figures with Co and Hagan scoring 28 points each as both teams treated a big crowd to a dazzling display of shotmaking and spectacular plays.
