Crispa turned the tables on Toyota this time with a 116-107 win last night to set a titular showdown with San Miguel Beer in the PBA Asian Invitational Championship at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Redmanizers took control of the match from the start and relied on one-on-one specialist Glen Hagan to preserve the win after Toyota had threatened in the dying minutes.
San Miguel earlier formalized its entry into the finals with an easy 109-99 victory over Universal Textiles.
Hagan who was pulled out once for delaying the ball too much, redeemed himself in the homestretch. He scored a crucial drive and made three loose ball recoveries, aside from issuing the assist that iced the game.
The Corollas threatened to turn the game around with four unanswered points that sent them breathing on the Redmanizers neck, 105-108 with barely three minutes left of the game.
Fortunato Co scored on top of the key to lift some of pressure but Francis Arnaiz retaliated with a drive, time down to one minute 50 seconds.
“I understand why the coach pulled me out,” Hagan said afterwards. “I am happy that I redeemed myself, but please, this is a team effort. We all want to win.”
It will be the 15th time the Redmanizers are figuring in the final playoff which they had won nine times before.
The Crispa-SMB championship is set Thursday at 7:30 p.m. following the preliminary match featuring Toyota and South Korea at 5:30 p.m.
The Beermen waltz to a 109-99 victory over Universal Textile to enter the finals for the second time this year.
The prodigious Norman Black pumped in 55 points, pulled down 22 rebounds and blocked eight attempts to spark San Miguel’s easy win.
“Sana makalusot,” winning coach Tommy Manotoc said referring to SMB’s second crack at the title. “The short series favored us. I hope we’ll make it this time.”
The Beermen lost to the Corollas in a marathon best-of-seven title playoff in the last PBA Reinforced All-Filipino Conference three weeks ago.
Except in brief periods in the first half, the Wranglers failed to put up a decent show, trailing by as much as 14 points in the homestretch.
