Philip Cezar sent the game into overtime with two foul shots with one second left last night and then scored the winning goal in the extension to lift Crispa to a 105-103 victory over arch rival Toyota in the PBA Open Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
The win, which gave Crispa a 61-56 edge over Toyota in their own private series in the play-for-pay loop, served as a consolation for the Redmanizers who had failed to win a single title this season, duplicating their shutout in 1978.
The Redmanizers, winners of nine PBA titles, finished third in the Reinforced All-Filipino Conference, placed second to San Miguel Beer in the Invitational, and failed to survive the eliminations of the Open Conference for the first time in its chequered history.
Crispa finished the eliminations of the Open tourney with a 6-12 record while the Super Corollas, who have qualified for the quarterfinals along with Yco-Tanduay, San Miguel and U/Tex, closed out with an 8-10 slate.
SMB finished the elims with a 10-8 record following a 132-125 decision over U/Tex in the first game last night. The loss gave the Wranglers an 8-10 card.
Gilbey’s Gin’s Wilfredo Generalao fought back from a 0-7 deficit to beat Yco-Tanduay’s Frankie Lim, 13-1-, in the final of the six feet and below category of Shakey’s one-on-one tournament.
Generalao, Rookie of the Year in 1980, thus won the top prize of P25,000 plus P10,000 bonus given to him by Gilbey’s team manager Carlos “Honeyboy” Palanca III for winning the match.
