Toyota outclassed Crispa last night in two aspects — battle of the imports and the local side — as the Tamaraws beat the Redmanizers, 120-110, before some 30,000 fans in the PBA second conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
Bruce “Sky” King and Andrew Fields outshone Cyrus Mann and Corneli Warner while Arnulfo Tuadles led a stirring play by Toyota’s local players as the Tamaraws led practically all the way en route to the easy win.
Toyota’s win somehow overshadowed Royal Tru-Orange’s come-from-behind 105-104 victory over defending champion U-Tex that extended the Orangemen’s winning streak to seven.
Already given up for lost after falling behind by 27 points in the third quarter, 53-80, the Orangemen rampaged for 33 points in the final quarter while the Wranglers scored a season-low 12 points that turned the contest around.
“We played a fantastic game for three quarters but the boys lost their heads in the fourth,” said U-Tex coach Tommy Manotoc after the game.
It was the fifth loss in seven games for the defending champions.
Except for brief stretches in the second and third quarters, the Tamaraws, inspired by the presence of head coach and team manager Dante Silverio, were finally in command all the way.
With Fields scoring almost at will against the foul-troubled Mann and Tuadles completely outplaying Fortunato Co, Jr., the Tams stormed ahead by 17 points twice in the fourth quarter before lowering the boom on the Redmanizers with a 19-point bubble, 111-92.
“The boys were inspired. The presence of Dante on the bench was a big morale booster,” said Toyota mentor Fort Acuna.
Tuadles led all scorers with 26 points, followed by Robert Jaworski with 24. Bruce King had 23, Fields contributed 14 and Abe King added 11.
Co, who broke loose only when the Tamaraws had the game all wrapped up, and Philip Cezar scored 18 points apiece. Mann and Alberto Guidaben scored 14 each while Warner made 12.
Toyota cemented its hold on second place with its seventh win in eight matches while Crispa, still in third place, absorbed its second loss in seven outings.
Warner will be retained for at least two more matches according to Dalupan because Crispa’s new import, Irving Chatman, sprained his ankle during his first scrimmage with the team last Tuesday.
Doctors ordered the 6’9’’ (205.7 cms.) Chatman to rest for at least 10 days, said Dalupan. He is expected to see action in the second round.
Jacinto Chua of Great Taste edged Rene Canent of Tanduay, 22-20, to qualify for the quarterfinals of the Sprite-sponsored one-on-one tournament.
