Crispa squandered a 16-point lead and had to do a lot of scrambling before coming through with a 98-91 win over Toyota that stretched its winning streak to 13 games in the PBA All-Filipino Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
With Robert Jaworski missing the action with a foot injury, the Tamaraws looked real goners for more than two quarters but the old fire came back starting late in the third period to turn a rout into a thriller.
Down by 16 points in the third quarter, 52-68, the Tams pounced on a weak Crispa combination to narrow the gap at the end of the third quarter, 72-69, and went on to grab the lead, 91-87, going into the last four minutes.
But Toyota, with its big men in foul trouble, failed to score a single point after that while Crispa unloaded 11 straight, capped by a jumpshot by Fortunato Co, Jr., 27 seconds left.
The Redmanizers thus are now only seven games away from an unprecedented 20-game sweep while tying their 13-game winning streak set in 1977.
It was the 88th meeting between the two clubs with the Redmanizers boosting its to 46-42 over their arch rivals.
William Adornado matched the all-time scoring record in the All-Filipino conference with a sizzling 64-point effort to power the U-Tex Wranglers to a 126-111 victory over San Miguel Beer in the first game.
It was a personal show for the 29-year-old Adornado who made good 27 of 38 field goal attempts for a scorching 71 percentage.
Drawing lusty cheers from the crowd with his every point, Adornado also made good 10 of 11 free throws, had three assists and pulled down 12 rebounds in matching the four-year-old record set by Danilo Florencio in 1977 while playing for 7-Up.
