Alberto Guidaben fired 13 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter last night as Crispa fought back after squandering a 23-point lead to beat Toyota, 126-124, and square their best-of-five series for the PBA Open Conference championship at one game apiece.

Robert Jaworski missed a desperation three-point shot with one second left that could have won the game for the Super Diesels.

The Redmanizers, who had dropped a 123-116 decision in the series opener Thursday night, fell back by four points, 100-104, after the Super Diesels had razed that 23-point lead late in the second quarter, 70-47.

After Bernardo Carpio charitied to make it 101-104, Guidaben, coming in for Philip Cezar, hit two quick jumpers to regain the lead for Crispa, 105-104, and trigger a see-saw battle that saw the lead change hands five times and the score tied three times, the last at 119-all.

Guidaben put the Redmanizers ahead for good with a drive, 121-119, and then charitied after James Hardy’s two free throws to give the Redmanizers a five-point lead, 124-119, 1:30 remaining.

But Francis Arnaiz put the Redmanizers back into the fight with a three-point play off Fortunato Co, Jr.’s sixth foul, 124-122.

Cezar free threw for a 125-122 Crispa lead but Leopoldo Herrera scored in the return play to cut the Redmanizers lead to one, 125-124, two seconds left.

After a Crispa timeout, Hardy charitied on Fields’ sixth foul, 126-124, and following a Toyota timeout, Jaworski, the league’s runaway leader on three-point field goals, missed one as the final buzzer sounded to the roar of some 15,000 fans at the Araneta Coliseum.

In the first game, U-Tex star William Adornado became the eighth player in PBA history to score 5,000 points but his team was routed, 137-107, by San Miguel Beer to tie their own best-of-five series for third place also at 1-1.

The Wranglers may have lost Lim Eng Beng for the rest of the series when the ace sentinel was injured when he hit a goalpost following a drive. He left the coliseum with a brace on his neck.

For the third time, the Crispa-Toyota game was officiated by National Basketball Association referees Jim Capers and Lee Jones.

Said Crispa Coach Virgilio “Baby” Dalupan on the collapse of his team in the second half.

“Bumaligtad ang takbo ng laban. Kung ano ang ganda ng laro namin sa first half ay siya namang ganda ng laro ng Toyota sa second half (The tide turned. We played very well in the first half but it was Toyota’s turn in the second).”
