With nothing but prestige at stake, the Toyota Super Diesels outgunned the Crispa Redmanizers last night, 135-124, in a high-scoring tuneup for their PBA Open championship series starting tomorrow at the Araneta Coliseum.

Eight Super Diesels scored in double figures as Toyota scored its first victory in four meetings with Crispa this season and topped the semifinal round with a 5-1 card.

Dethroned defending champion U-Tex subdued San Miguel Beer, 118-114, in the first game as they also prepared for their best-of-five series for third place.

The Super Diesels relied on an explosive third quarter that saw them lead by 18 points, 95-77, and then turned back a Crispa rally in the final period to win with plenty to spare.

Crispa’s Fortunato Co, Jr. led all scorers with 28 points, aside from tying the season record of four three-point field goals held by Robert Jaworski, Jojo de Guzman and Aaron James, who tied the record only in the preceding match.

The pair of no-bearing games drew a lean crowd of 5,000.

The two teams battled to 11 ties, the last at 66-all. But the Super Diesels dropped a 29-11 bomb to rip the game apart and take that 18-point lead, 95-77.
