Defending champion Crispa, again sparked by import Glenn Hagan, edged Toyota last night, 117-114, to take a commanding 2-1 lead in their best-of-five semifinals in the PBA Reinforced All-Filipino Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
Elpidio Villamin sank a pair of pressure-laden free throws with 12 seconds left to insure the Redmanizers ‘ win after Arnulfo Tuadles narrowed the gap to only one point, 114-115, 55 ticks left.
Earlier, San Miguel clobbered U/Tex, 112-91, to take a similar 2-1 lead in their own semifinal series.
The Brewers, playing all-Filipino in the fourth period, led all the way and made a record 36 assists, 21 of them in the first half.
The six-foot Hagan, scoring heavily on one-on-one plays, led all scorers with a night-high 36 points, including what proved to be Crispa’s winning basket which gave the Redmanizers a 115-110 lead, two minutes left.
Two baskets by Tuadles, who topscored for the Super Corollas with 29 points, put Toyota within one, 114-115, 55 ticks to go.
Toyota had a chance to regain the lead after Hagan missed on a drive but Ramon Fernandez muffed his jumpshot.
Crispa got the rebound and Abe King fouled Villamin in an apparent gamble that did not pay off as the former Apcor star coolly sank both charities for that 117-114 Crispa lead.
In a desperation move, Toyota coach Ed Ocampo sent in a still-limping Robert Jaworski in the last 12 seconds in an obvious move for a three-point shot that would tie the score.
But Jaworski missed and so did Tuadles with three ticks left.
