Toyota, starring the trio of Ramon Fernandez, Donnie Koonce and Arnulfo Tuadles, struck down defending champion Crispa last night, 125-114, to send their best-of-five semifinal series into a rubber match while San Miguel Beer clobbered U/Tex, 118-99, to enter the finals of the PBA Reinforced All-Filipino Conference.
Fernandez fired a game-high 38 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and dealt eight assists as the Super Corollas tied the series at two games apiece.
Koonce unloaded 32 points while Tuadles contributed 20 aside from handcuffing Crispa import Glenn Hagan, who scored only 13 points.
The fifth and final match will be played at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Araneta Coliseum with the winner earning the right to play San Miguel in the best-of-seven championship series.
The Brewers again rode the torrid shooting of Norman Black to beat the Wranglers and win their semifinal series, three games to one.
After taking the half by five points, 56-51, Tommy Manotoc’s boys routed the Wranglers in the third quarter, 26-14, to break the game open and take a commanding 82-65 lead at the end of the third period.
It will be the fourth championship appearance for Manotoc, three of them as coach of the Wranglers, while it will be San Miguel’s second championship stint. SMB won the 1979 Open Conference as Royal Tru-Orange.
“We have to play as a team together, defensive and offensively, in order to win and I think that’s what we’re doing,” said the 32-year-old Manotoc.
Toyota coach Ed Ocampo, who had piloted Royal in its winning campaign in 1979, was all praise for Fernandez, Koonce and Tuadles.
“Fernandez played well so did Koonce and Tuadles was outstanding in his defense on Hagan,” said Ocampo.
Then Super Corollas led by only four at the end of the third quarter, 90-86, but an 11-5 salvo opening the fourth period gave them their first sizeable lead, 101-91.
The Redmanizers, led by Fortunato Co, Jr., tried to stage several rallies but each time they were turned back by the steady snipping of the red-hot Toyota trio.
